The OUTLOOK is Great!

Amidst dwindling enrollment, budget cuts and the talk of decline in America’s educational system, news is still bright at Rockland Community College. RCC’s student newspaper, OUTLOOK, and its writers and editors have been honored by The Society of Professional Journalists and named “the best all-around non-daily student newspaper in the Northeast and New England.” RCC’s OUTLOOK ranks high in a league with other top-winning newspapers from outstanding institutions, and community college newspapers hold their own among top four-year institutions. No other SUNY schools were named in any category.  Award winners were:

Best All-Around Non-daily Student Newspaper

First Place: OUTLOOK, SUNY Rockland Community College
Second Place: THE TORCH, Bergen Community College
Third Place: THE MAINE CAMPUS, University of Maine

Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper

First Place: YALE DAILY NEWS, Yale University
Second Place: THE DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN, University of Pennsylvania
Third Place:  THE DAILY ORANGE, Syracuse University

OUTLOOK editors who have worked so hard to make this a premier newspaper are Marina Watts, Editor-in-Chief; Suzanne Peguero, Managing Editor; Benedict Tagle, Sports Editor; Anuj Chokshi, Photo Editor; and Julie Devito, Production Manager. The Faculty Sponsor of the OUTLOOK is Instructor of English, Robert Fuentes. Kudos to this outstanding team that now competes with other regional winners at national competition in Anaheim, California, in August. OUTLOOK’s competition in Anaheim will be the University of Georgia, James Madison University, Columbia College (in Chicago), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Abilene Christian University, and other four-year institutions.

The mission statement of The Society of Professional Journalists, cited as being the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, includes the following as some of its goals: to promote a flow of information (so that “the American people can be well-informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives and their local and national communities”), “to stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism,” “to foster excellence among journalists,” “to inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists,” “to encourage diversity in journalism,” “to encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.”  Its website identifies its members as working professional journalists, anchors, reporters, major newspaper publishers and editors, journalism educators, and journalism students.  Professor Fuentes says, “Annually, The Society of Professional Journalists sponsors the national Mark of Excellence Awards, which recognize the highest degree of accomplishment and skill in writing, editing, and all-around publication quality.”

Rockland Community College is so proud of OUTLOOK and of its staff and sponsor for their dedication and outstanding achievement. We know that they will continue to represent RCC well in the California competition.

While I have always believed that community colleges are primarily teaching institutions and teaching is at the center of all we do, I also believe after almost fifty years in community college education that our best teachers are also actively involved in some kind of scholarship/professional activities. Honoring Distinguished Faculty

Retired Science Professors Phyllis Krasnow and George Krasilovsky with Dr. Cliff L. Wood at the Beta, Beta, Beta Induction Ceremonies Professors of Science Phyllis Krasnow and George Krasilovsky , PhD, were honored at the recent Beta Beta Beta induction for decades of dedicated service to the RCC Biology community. Both professors served as mentors to science students in the Sam Draper M/TS Honors Program . Professor Krasnow began teaching at RCC in 1969, and served as a mentor in the Honors Program from 1980-2000. She was known for her student-centered approach. Beyond her work in the classroom and with advisement, she founded the Biology Club, and created a Biology Scholarship offered through the RCC Foundation . She was instrumental in helping many students transfer to Cornell. Even after she retired and move to south New Jersey in 1998, she drove more than two hours each way to continue to teach and mentor part-time. She received the Chancellor’s Award for Exc...

The Dr. Sonya Shapiro Memorial Scholarship Program

It’s been more than a year since the Board of Trustees lost one of its most loyal members, Sonya Shapiro , EdD, distinguished educator and community activist. Dr. Shapiro, who died in May 2014 at the age of 87, served on the Board from August 2001 until her passing, holding leadership positions as Secretary and Vice Chair during her nearly 14-year tenure. Dr. Shapiro’s lifetime commitment to education and her long-term support of Rockland Community College and its students continue through an extraordinary gift of $100,000 from her estate to create the “Dr. Sonya Shapiro Memorial Scholarship Program.” Each year, the scholarship program, administered by the Rockland Community College Foundation , will provide five scholarships for “returning adult students (21 years or older)” who have the motivation and determination to pursue careers, enabling them to fulfill their aspirations and goals for a better life.
